The Walkway
We were all disappointed when the boardwalk by the water did not open at Christmas, even if some of us did get to enjoy it when somehow a gap in the fence opened up! But HLC tells us it won’t be long. Exterior work at Fabric Café is looking close to finished and there are just some final inspections to be completed and signed off before the walkway really is open to all.
Headquarters Building
This is the terracotta coloured art deco building across from the park and flag pole at the far end of Buckley Road. Work here is projected to finish in March. Its interior has been designed with youth group activities in mind and there are extra rooms that will be good for people who maybe work from home and want to hire a meeting space separate from their house. Hiring out will be managed by Auckland Council.
Sunderland Lounge
The vintage weatherboard hall, just along from the headquarters building, used to be the RNZAF sport and social club. Work will soon start on bringing it up to date with new toilets and kitchen improvements. The dilapidated old bar area is to be removed and there’ll be meeting space available here too, with work finishing later in the year.
Chichester Cottage
March was the expected completion month for refurbing the old cottage, which is on the water’s edge looking out over the Upper Harbour Bridge. However, building delays on the neighbouring development have meant services have not yet been laid and so the wait for the cottage will be a little longer. When it’s done, it’ll be a great little centre for small community events such as classes and get-togethers. Management of the cottage will be in the Society’s hands.
